MEMORY

"OUR MEMORIES MAY HAUNT US OR SUSTAIN US, BUT THEY ALWAYS DEFINE US. WITHOUT THEM, WE ARE LEFT TO WANDER ALONE IN THE DARK."

Memory is how we carry our lives with us, a prism through which we see ourselves, others, and the world. As Freud observed in The Psychopathology of Everyday Life (1901), even early experiences we may have suppressed continue to influence the present. Within this capacity, individual memories emerge. Some announce themselves as they happen: milestones, birthdays, heartbreak, moments\you sense will remain vivid. Others stay hidden, lying dormant until a taste, a smell, or a sound brings them into awareness. Food, in particular, holds memory through flavour and scent, those who feed us and the act of sharing meals

As every second passes, we have a moment more to remember and with more information than ever crowding for space in our minds, the way we remember has changed. At times we recall a moment first through someone else’s photograph before we remember the feeling of being there ourselves.

For this chapter, we invite you to explore your relationship with memory and the memories that live within your awareness, as well as those that lay beneath.
